Review
First things first, when I decided to read this book, I didn’t realize it is becoming a movie. Saying this, I am really glad I didn’t know because that would have caused me to set expectations for it. But this book would’ve broken them because it was amazing. I sat down to read a chapter before going to bed, yet I ended up finishing the whole book within a couple of hours.
Reading the first couple of pages, I did not think that I would like this book. It started off pretty slowly; however, I am really glad that I decided to continue on because this was one of the most heart wrenching and emotional books I’ve ever read. Not only that, the imagery and the careful detail of every scene the authors were trying to communicate were really well written, as well as the beautiful cover of the book which was what captured my attention in the first place. Additionally, this book is important as it brings more awareness to Cystic Fibrosis.
The two main characters in the book are Stella and Will who both have CF disease, yet Will also has B. Cepacia making him pretty much lethal to Stella. The third character is Poe, Stella’s best friend who sadly also suffers from the same condition she has. This book really brought these characters to life, which made me instantly attached to them. Stella is shown as a very pretty girl with a passion of having everything under organized and planned out. Her innocence and her reason for staying alive will make you love her that much more. Whereas Will couldn’t care less about order and life. He is the exact opposite of her, yet watching him develop as a person will very quickly make you grow a soft spot for him. And then there is Poe. Although he isn’t either of the main two characters in the book, I found myself excited every time he was in the story. His kindness and the pureness of his friendship with Stella ties the whole story together.
I can’t pinpoint an exact favourite section of this book, yet I can say that I loved all of it. The author definitely stuck to reality instead of creating a fairytale. The topic of actually loving someone is touched upon a lot, and I want to expand on that but I can’t spoil it for you. There were also many twists and surprises within the story so it never slowed down once the introductions ended, and it never felt like it was dragging on.
Recommendations
If you can’t tell yet, you should definitely read this book. I am really glad that it is the first book, and hopefully of many, that I have read during this Christmas break since school has kept me way too busy to be able to read and write about them. I would say that this is more suitable to read during the day more than being a book to read before bed as the story will definitely keep you awake. I am giving this book 4.9 out of 5 stars, and it is currently rated 4.08 on Goodreads.
